There is a setting in the CF administrator that controls the maximum length
of time a request can take before it is abandoned and throws this error.
Chances are your database query is taking so long it's exceeding this
setting.  In the CF administrator under Server Settings, click on "Settings"
and check the setting for "Timeout requests after".

You can also use the timeout attribute of the <cfquery> tag to control the time each action of the query is allowed to have to run.

<cfquery timeout="500">

Great point; I also failed to mention that you can put a requesttimeout
variable in your URL on the pages that you know are going to run longer than
the CF admin's default timeout setting.  Of course step 1 will be to try and
optimize your code, but if it's as good as it's going to get for your
situation, this is another way to bypass the default setting in the CF
administrator.

 The request has exceeded the allowable time limit Tag: CFQUERY
which forget, after this error message:

 ---> The request has exceeded the allowable time limit Tag: CFQUERY
         The error occurred on line 161.

 I must wave off the CF MX Application server so that one can work again
